Paintings by Darrell Hook showcasing the beauty of Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef have long been a source of wonder and enjoyment for people around the world, however prior to a recent makeover of his Reef Images website, prospective customers have not been able to make purchases online.

Having realised the likely detrimental impact on sales of requiring those interested in purchasing an original artwork or a print to express interest via email, with orders being processed manually, Reef Images contacted Kook in need of an economical eCommerce solution and opted for a Shopify website setup.

When it comes to creating a professional-looking online storefront with a payment solution to accept credit cards, Shopify is an obvious choice for low-cost projects without a large development and customisation scope. At Kook, we not only handle Shopify setups but also Shopify website makeovers.

Our approach

A popular eCommerce platform with mobile-responsive designs and plenty of practical themes, integrations and optimisations available, Shopify an ideal CMS for clients who want a quickly-launched site without a large number of customised features.

Wanting to fully convey the beauty of Darrell’s art, we knew the overall design for the site needed to be visually stunning so we set about allowing the art speak for itself. This included choosing a Shopify theme designed to showcase imagery.

In customising the theme with the Reef Images logo and brand colours, minimally to highlight and coincide with the artwork, we also optimised the site navigation structure, product categorisation and product pages.

On the homepage, with some custom coding required to modify the Shopify theme as required, this included:

  • Using zoomed-in crops of paintings in a slideshow, each with a clear Call To Action.
  • Showcasing a gallery of other artworks, each linked to different collections – new releases, original artwork and prints.
  • Showcasing a dozen other artworks, each linked to individual product pages for quick and easy purchasing.

The results

The new Reef Images website is modern in appearance, mobile responsive and enables online purchases using credit card. Without any doubt, it’s far more visually pleasing than the old site, offers a better user experience and provides a much higher chance of conversion.

Product collections are easy to navigate, with pricing highly visible. Product pages feature additional details, including artwork size to help customers determine if it will work for the wall space they have in mind, as well as providing the ability to zoom in and take a closer look at the painting or print by hovering over the image. Customers can also sort products in various ways – including alphabetically, best sellers or based on price.
