Setting Up Your Mail Account

Firstly, tap on the 'Settings' icon on your iPhone, and then navigate to the 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars' section. Once you're in this section, you will need to tap on 'Add Account' from within the accounts section. Next you're going to tap on the relevant account type, which for this setup is 'Other' (located at the bottom of the list). Then, you will need to tap on 'Add Mail Account' from the available options, which will take you to the New Account page.

On this page you're going to see a few fields that need to be filled out, so let's quickly run through what each of these fields refers to:

iPhone New Account

  • Your Name The name you wish to appear when people receive your emails
  • Email Address The email address you are setting up to send mail from (e.g. 'yourname@yourwebsite.com.au')
  • Password Your password for the relevant mail account (usually between six and eight characters)
  • Description The description for the account to be shown on your mobile device

One these fields have been filled out, you're going to need to tap on 'Next' in the top right corner. This next section refers to the mail account settings, and they way you are going to retrieve your mail.  

Mail Account Settings

The mail account settings going to be the most important section during your mail account setup. These variables are fairly universal for devices, and will usually be the same values you have utilised for your desktop computer. There are a fair few fields on this page, so let's quickly run through what each of these is referring to:

  • IMAP / POP This refers to the account type (either can be selected, but 'POP' is the most common)
  • Your Name The name you wish to appear when people receive your emails
  • Email Address The email address you are setting up to send mail from (e.g. 'yourname@yourwebsite.com.au')
  • Description The description for the account to be shown on your mobile device

Incoming Mail Server

  • Host Name This is the server that you receive mail from, typically in the 'mail.[yourwebsite].com.au' format
  • User Name This is your  full email address for the account (e.g. 'yourname@yourwebsite.com.au')
  • Password Your password for the relevant mail account (usually between six and eight characters)

Outgoing Mail Server

  • Outgoing mail server This is the server that you send mail from, typically in the 'mail.[yourwebsite].com.au' format
  • User Name This is your  full email address for the account (e.g. 'yourname@yourwebsite.com.au')
  • Password Your password for the relevant mail account (usually between six and eight characters)

One these fields have been filled out, you're going to need to tap on 'Next' in the top right corner. You will need to ensure that the mail account is switched on (appears as a green toggle), and then you will select 'Save'. The mail account will then go through the 'Verifying' process, which may take a couple of minutes to complete.

iPhone SSL Connection Error

It is possible that you will receive the 'Cannot Connect Using SSL' error message, which is easily resolved by tapping 'Yes'.

Advanced Mail Settings

Once the mail setup has been completed, it will take you back to the 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars' section. Once here, you will need to tap on the account you have just created, which will appear in the accounts section (i.e. the description you previously gave the account). This will take us to the mail settings for the account you have just created. Then, you will need to scroll down to the bottom of page, and tap on the 'SMTP' option. This takes us to the advanced mail settings for your outgoing mail. In this section, you need to tap on the primary server that was setup for your account (e.g. mail.[yourwebsite].com.au). iPhone Advanced Mail SettingsOn this page, you then need to ensure that the 'Use SSL' option is unselected (appears as a grey toggle). In addition, it is worth checking that the 'Authentication' option selected is 'Password'. Once these items have been completed, you can tap 'Save', and then back to the mail account settings. When you're back on the mail account settings page, you will need to select 'Advanced', which is also located at the bottom of the page. On this page, you are going through the exact same process that you just completed for the 'SMTP' section. You will need to ensure that 'Use SSL' is unselected (appears as a grey toggle), and that the 'Authentication' selected is 'Password'. Finally, tap the back button, and then tap 'Done' from the top right corner.
