Setting up email in Outlook 2013

Setup Your Mail Account on Outlook 2013

Open up Outlook 2013, and select 'File' from the top level navigation. Once this tab has been selected, it is just a matter of clicking the 'Add Account' button. Outlook2013A Select the second option ('Manual setup or additional server types'), and then click the 'Next' button. Then, select the third option ('POP or IMAP'), and then click the 'Next' button.

Mail Account Settings

This will take you to the 'POP and IMAP' account settings page, which is going to be the most important section during your mail account setup. These variables are fairly universal, even across different devices (e.g. iPhone and Android), so the same values can usually be used across different devices. There are a number of variables on this page, so let's quickly run through what each of these fields is referring to:

  • Your Name The name you wish to appear when people receive your emails
  • Email Address The email address you are setting up to send mail from (e.g. 'yourname@yourwebsite.com.au')
  • Account Type This will typically refer to selecting 'POP3' or 'IMAP' from the drop down list
  • Incoming mail server This is the server that you receive mail from, typically in the 'mail.[yourwebsite].com.au' format
  • Outgoing mail server This is the server that you send mail from, typically in the 'mail.[yourwebsite].com.au' format
  • User Name This is your  full email address for the account (e.g. 'yourname@yourwebsite.com.au')
  • Password Your password for the relevant mail account (usually between six and eight characters)

Once the relevant fields have been completed, click the 'More Settings...' button. Then, navigate to the 'Outgoing Server' tab.

Advanced Mail Settings

Check the 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication' checkbox, and select 'Use same settings as incoming mail server'. Outlook2013B Then, select the 'Advanced' tab, and ensure the 'This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)' is unchecked. In the 'Delivery' section of the Advanced tab (towards the bottom), it is important to:

  • Check the 'Leave a copy of messages on the server' checkbox
  • Uncheck the 'Remove from server after X days' checkbox

Outlook2013C Click the 'Ok' button to finalise your changes, and then click the 'Next' button. Finally, click the 'Finish' button, and Outlook should automatically test your account settings
